Bloom Construction has been appointed by Jensco to deliver a significant heritage retrofit at 52–53 Old Steine, Brighton. This £4M+ project will convert a pair of disused Grade II listed Georgian townhouses into 33 high-quality student accommodation units.
Working in collaboration with Able Partners as lead designers, the scheme will return the building to its original residential use while integrating modern building performance standards. The approach balances historical preservation with sustainable retrofit, aligning with long-term environmental and social value goals.
Scope of Work
Key elements of the scheme include:
- Restoration of original staircases and decorative architectural features
- Installation of air source heat pumps
- Integration of photovoltaic panels
- Upgrades to improve energy performance and internal layouts
- Careful structural coordination within a constrained and sensitive fabric
As our Managing Director, Tom O’Toole, commented:
“This is exactly the kind of project where our team thrives. These works are exceptionally complex in terms of compliance due to the restrictive nature of the structure.”
The project team also includes Jensen Hunt Design as structural engineers and Pulse Consult providing client-side project management and quantity surveying support.
